This gold rhinoceros lay for 700 years in a royal grave on Mapungubwe hill before it was unearthed in 1933. It is the most widely recognised of the gold artifacts found in southern Africa and the only complete animal. (Many fragments of goldplated figurines were found, but no other complete animal.)
