ANGLO BOER WAR - ANGLO BOERE OORLOG 1899 - 1902. The English like to refer to it as the Second Anglo-Boer
'South African War ( a.k.a. the Anglo-Boer War) Fact is that it still remains the most terrible and destructive modern armed conflict in South Africa's history. A GENOCIDE AGAINST INNOCENT WOMEN AND CHILDREN- THE ONLY WAY BRITAIN COULD GET THE BOERS TO SURRENDER!
The sign says that this is "Grietjie", a muzzle loader first used during the Battle of Blood River, then later during the Second Boer War. Mounted on the rear axle of an ox-wagon, it is apparently now on display at the Voortrekker Monument.
The War | South African History Online Cartoon: The Transvaal and the Orange Free State are seen as virgins, tied to a burning stake, which is lit by John Bull, the British version of America’s Uncle Sam. All of Europe's powers seem to be standing by, watching, but not helping. (From Amsterdamsche Courant, 23 March 1900)
75mm Krupp Feldkanone L/27. One of 14 imported by the OVS in 1893 and 1897. Pne of four sent down to Natal at the start of the war. The original capton of this photo says this gun and crew fought at Rietfontein, Spioenkop and Vaalkrants. The photo was probably taken with the return to the Free State when they were called back to help stem the tide on the Western Front. Note the man with the horse is dressed in the OVSAC's brown corduroy field dress.
