31/201 Battalion was formed as Combat Group Alpha in 1974, then renamed to 31 Battalion after Operation Savannah. In 1980 the unit became 201 Battalion as part of the SWATF. It was finally renamed 31 Battalion again in 1989. It was located at Omega Base in the West Caprivi before being relocated to South Africa after the war.
701 Battalion 33/701 Battalion (701 BN) was formed in 1977 as 33 Battalion (33 BN) and renamed to 701 Battalion as part of the SWATF in 1980. It was based in Mpacha, Caprivi, in Sector 70. It took part in operations into Zambia and from 1978 deployed companies into Kavango, Kaokoland and Owambo. From 1983 a company of Marines were attached. It had an attached SWATF armoured car squadron and artillery battery.
Sector 20 was established as the headquarters of one of the 7 geographical areas within South-West Africa used by the SADF to control and coordinate military operations. Sector 20 included kavango and West Caprivi, covering the Angolan border from the Cubango (Kavango) River east to to the Cuando (Kwando) River, with its headquarters at Rundu. It was the Area Of Responsibility of both SWATF 202 and 203 Bns.
