The Cape Karoo made up of more than 400,000 square kilometers is a semi-arid, fossil-rich, ancient stone-age region and one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. It is home to two popular villages - Matjiesfontein, alongside the N1, and Prince Albert, tucked snugly at the base of the Swartberg Mountains. Beaufort West is its capital and oldest town.

The Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden is a must for succulent lovers. The Garden lies on the outskirts of Worcester, 120km from Cape Town. This Garden is unique in that it is the only truly succulent garden in the southern hemisphere and on the African continent. One of the floral highlights of the year is spring, when thousands of annuals and brightly coloured vygies come into flower. This colour spectacle lasts from mid-August to the end of September.
