The "Red Angus" breed originated in the British Isles and recorded reference to the appearance of red cattle dates back to 1805. The first Angus herdbook, published in Scotland in 1862 entered both reds and blacks without distinction. Early in the development of the breed, Hugh Watson of Keilor, Scotland, arbitrarily decided that black was the proper color for the breed - he could just as easily have chosen red. The main difference between Red Angus and black Angus is color.

Red Angus Angus cattle are a breed of cattle commonly used in beef production. They were developed from cattle native to the counties of Aberdeenshire and Angus in Scotland, and are known as Aberdeen Angus in most parts of the world.

The McPhail Angus Farm, in the vicinity of Seneca, SC, has been a locally significant farm for more than one hundred years. The farm illustrates twentieth century developments in agriculture in the South Carolina upcountry, most notably the transition from a traditional dependence on growing cotton as a cash crop to raising cattle as a major source of farm income, and growing fescue grass as both a source of pasture feed and a cash crop.
