Singer Elvis Blue and a humourous tagline on one of Continental Outdoor Media’s billboards have seen sales of a local magazine, Easy DIY, increase two-fold (the magazine’s cover, featuring Elvis Blue, was advertised on the billboard).  The play of words: “Elvis hasn’t left the building, he’s busy fixing it”, have clearly attracted the attention of DIYers in South Africa, who were seemingly surprised that a DIY magazine would portray a young and trendy popstar on its cover.

With the launch of the brand new Spiderman series on 01 September , we wanted maximum reach and frequency and with this Street Pole campaign, we got it. The organisers of the annual music festival, OppiKoppi, knew that the fastest way to get publicity was to stage a billboard campaign, and they were right. The billboards, carrying OppiKoppi’s theme message, ‘Sweet Thing’, became a hit with potential festival-goers. Without any prompting, fans posted images of themselves interacting with the boards. According to a new report by The Centre for Future Studies, a UK-based consulting firm, within the next 12 months we will see a revolution in digital outdoor advertising media starting with advertising tailored to respond to a person's mood.     The report is predicting that by 2012, digital out-of-home media will rapidly begin to adopt technologies that include smart signage that will be enabled with emotion recognition software. Seriously.
