Shrouded within the park of Francesco I de’ Medici's Villa Demidoff (just north of Florence, Italy), sits the 16th century Giambologna sculpture the Appennine Colossus. It recalls the figure of Atlas in Virgil’s Aeneid and once stood amidst other bronze statues, but this massive brick and stone structure withstood centuries in the same spot, managing to maintain its figurative composition in all that time.
