The romance of fragrance - Life is a Garden

Of all the sensory delights that a garden offers, the most romantic of all is fragrance. While a garden is typically designed to delight the eye, to be truly romantic, fragrance is essential. Drifts of a sweet scent as one strolls along walkways or sits on a bench make time spent in the garden more enjoyable, relaxing and sensuous. Now is the time to review your existing plantings and to plan where you can add plants with fragrant blooms. Many perfumed plants are also evergreen, so if your…

Natal Plum Carissa macrocarpa The Natal plum is a small tree or shrub native to South Africa. The fruit is also known as the large Num-Num in Zulu, and as the Noem-noem in Afrikaans. It is commonly found along the Eastern Cape coast line and is also common in Natal. The fruit is the only edible portion of the plant, as the rest is poisonous. 20 More Fruits You Probably Don't Know - Listverse

I love fruit and I clearly just can’t get enough of them. When I try to imagine what one of these odd fruits taste like, it’s almost like trying to imagine a new color. I just can’t seem to wrap my mind around something I have never experienced but that does not mean that I won’t try to experience as many as I possibly can in my lifetime. The white form of this Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum thyrsioides 'Chesapeake Snowflake') is quite rare in nature. Dense heads of long-lasting, pure white flowers sit atop a sturdy 10-inch scape. This cultivar contrasts brilliant white petals with very dark-colored anthers and stigma. Chesapeake Snowflake Star of Bethlehem is native to South Africa and is in the same plant family as hyacinths.

Felicia amelloides. Felicia amelloides catches the eye wherever it is planted, with its striking sky-blue and sunny yellow flowerheads, held well above the leaves. South Africa has been blessed with many felicias, several of which make excellent garden plants. This species is one of the best. Apart from its beauty, this plant has many advantages. It is hardy, fast growing, long-flowering and long-lived, more or less frost- and wind-resistant, needs only moderate water and little care.
