1899 Christmas Steps, Lewins Mead, Bristol

1899 - A crowded Christmas Steps in the Victorian era with straw boaters mixing with flat caps. This is one part of ancient Bristol that has survived, virtually unchanged apart from the signs but the city beyond is very different. At one time sailing ships moored at the bottom of these steps before the river Frome was covered over.

Seventy Years On The Centre

Here we are with another comparison shot, this time looking at a scene from the Centre in Bristol. The old view is from a postcard, undated but probably late 1930s or early 1940s. The photo was taken from what was then 'the Drawbridge', along which traffic could travel in the days before the Centre was remodelled in the later 1940s. The camera looks straight up Clare Street to Corn Street and the tower of All Saints Church in the distance. The 'Black & White Whisky' sign on the corner of…

Bristol Bridge from the High Street. between 1915 and 1919. Another wartime view with the lamps on the bridge painted blue. On the left a tram bound for Brislington stops to pick up passengers. while on the right a no.10 service from Knowle ends its journey at the bridge. The imposing and ornate Robinson building of 1876 dominates the corner of Victoria Street: it was badly damaged during the Blitz of 1940 but survived until 1961 when it was demolished to make way for the new Robinson tower…

c1920s Park Street, Bristol

The development of Park Street began in 1740 when the City Council leased land to Nathaniel Day, holder of Bullock's Park, to open a new street. Around that time, some houses were built on the north-east side of College Green, probably by James Paty the Elder. Around 1742 he was probably also involved in the development of adjacent Unity Street, where the use of stone facing and the rustication of the ground floor facades set a precedent for most of the later development in the Park Street…

Looking up the High Street from Bristol Bridge in 1905

Looking up the High Street from Bristol Bridge in 1905. New Baldwin Street has done away with Maiden Tavern Lane, one of the places which it was positively dangerous to pass through at night. In Marsh Street dilapidated dwellings crammed with human beings, ten families in a house, one to each room, and nine persons of all ages, sleeping together, have been swept away. Similar houses in Host Street and Rupert Street, and Lewins Mead have made way for large warehouses.

1928 Wine Street BS1

Broad Street, along with High Street, Wine Street and Corn Street, is one of the four original streets that have made up the city of Bristol since Saxon times, when it was the burgh of Brycgstow. In 1155 Bristol was given a charter (a document confirming certain rights held by the townspeople). In 1171 after the English conquered Ireland the people of Bristol were given Dublin as a colony by the king and many Bristolians settled there. Bristol also benefited when Henry II became King in…
