#pinyourcity contest: Jammin' in Johannesburg

I was born in Johannesburg and although I only lived there until I was 5 it is still very much home for me. I hope this mini collage of pictures will show Joburg for what it's not typically known for; sprinkling a bit of optimism on an otherwise paradigm of negativity that often surrounds people's perceptions of South Africa's epicenter.

This photograph, entitled 'The City of Gold', really does capture the richness of this lively metropolis. Thriving with culture and history, in Johannesburg there's something for everyone. [Source: jonhrusaphotos.com] #pinyourcity

Us South Africans take barbecuing very seriously; in fact 24th September marks National Braai Day (Afrikaans speak for bbq).In reality, there's nothing serious about a typical braai, it's a chance to kick back and relax with friends and family. I find it awesome that a nation's love for something as simple as a bbq can bring a city together! Whether it's lamb chop, or the traditional South Africa sausage, known as boerewors, nothing quite beats it.[Source: m.blogs.food24.com] #pinyourcity

This photograph was taken in the urban area of Soweto, which is estimated to be home to a third of Johannesburg’s residents. Once the location of the Soweto Uprising in 1976, this photograph paints a more optimistic picture of the future of Johannesburg. [Source: iseeadifferentyou.tumblr.com] #pinyourcity

This board wouldn't be complete without an image from the 2010 FIFA World Cup. South African flags in one hand, vuvuzelas in another, I love the sense of pride this photo evokes. [Source: Gianluigi Guercia/AFP/Getty]

Being a big fan of street art I love this wall mural created by ROA as part of the I ART Joburg series. Appearing as part of their endangered Rhino series, the artist leaves it up to you to decide whether these animals are extinct or asleep. [Source: todoinjoburg.co.za] #pinyourcity
