South Africa’s Yellow Rice | Geelrys
South African Yellow Rice with raisins is made by adding turmeric to the cooking water, along with raisins. In Afrikaans it's called 'Begrafnisrys' which means 'funeral rice'. It refers to the fact that people would usually have to travel a long way for funerals in times when ox-wagons were the most common type of transport, so everything would be done to make the simple ingredients farmers had on hand more 'special'.
The first time that I had “souskluitjies” for dessert, was at my Grandma Naomi Uys’s house in Johannesburg when I was about 15 years old. My Ouma was a very grand lady – perfectly groomed, well-traveled, informed and very stylish. Their townhouse in Northcliff was impeccable, filled with beautiful Persian carpets and mohair curtains.
