Grocery stores back in the were dominating the market. They had high priced food, especially meat. Grocery stores today don't have goods placed at such as prices anymore. I thought this was important to add because grocery stores were very unfair. First African American Police Officer was Wiley G. Overton. He was sworn in by the Brooklyn Police Department on March 6, 1891. (I believe this photo is of another officer.)

During a great storm on 9 February 1861 the crew of the Whitby lifeboat put to sea for the sixth time that day. Whitbys lifeboat capsised with the loss of all but one of the crew,Henry Freeman. * “Henry Freeman” Lifeboatman for over forty years and sole survivor of the Whitby lifeboat disaster of 1861 when the twelve other members of the crew were drowned close by Whitby"s West Pier. His escape from death was attributed to the recently introduced Board of Trade cork life jacket which he is seen wearing in this photograph. He died in December 1904 aged 69. One of Frank Sutcliffe"s best known portraits.
