In the 7th century, the Tang Dynasty of China controlled a third of the World's population on just 7% of its land. The Tang capital at Chang'an was the world's largest city, and wealth poured in from the fabled Silk Road. Even outside its official control, the Tang Dynasty was a strong cultural influence in neighboring Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. It was during the Tang Dynasty that Wu Zetian claimed the throne to become China's only female head of state in history.
