Helen Elizabeth Martins - Artist Extraordinaire

On a cold winters morning in 1976, a sadly misunderstood old lady surrendered to her pain and loneliness. She took her own life by swallowing caustic soda. Her death brought to a full circle the sad and lonely life of one of South Africa's truly remarkable women and artists. Her name was Helen Martins. She was 87 years old and lived as a near recluse for the bigger part of her life. Yet she will become known and recognised as a creative genius; her creation, The Owl House, becoming the…

The Owl House in Nieu Bethesda

The first town we stayed in during our road-trip in September, was Nieu Bethesda. Some may only know of its existence because of Helen Martins' & Koos Malgas' "Owl House". The town is quite off the beaten track and can only be accessed by dirt roads. We wanted to stay there for a night so that we could visit the Owl House in the late afternoon and then again the next morning. Helen Martins had a passion for light and her home is testimony to that. The house is small by most standards, but if…

The Owl House in Nieu Bethesda | London Traveller

Nieu Bethesda is hidden in the Great Karoo and perhaps best known for The Owl House so I planned a circular drive from Graaff Reinet. Google Maps said 119 kms and 2.25 hours but did not mention the potholed dirt road and almost complete lack of signposts! We … Continued

Owl House - a Visionary Environment with Helen Martins' sculptures

According to the official website of the Owl House Museum the number of visitors to this fascinating place has reached more than 15 000 annually. This begs the question, Why? What is it that people look for there?

HELEN MARTINS (1897-1976) | THE OWL HOUSE | South Africa | Known to the residents of Nieu-Bethesda as 'Miss Helen' and thought of as a strange and rather outlandish character, she shied away from general contact, and began transforming her house and garden. Despite crippling arthritis, and the amputation of her small toes which left her unable to wear anything but slip-ons on her feet, Martins decorated her home with 'glass and light'.
