12 MAY 2013 Today was Mother’s Day in South Africa. Some of my happiest moments were the times spent with my mother in the early morning, sitting and talking about the day ahead while sipping strong coffee and nibbling on bran and buttermilk rusks.

Muesli-beskuit, Beskuit kan gewwonlik vir twee maande gehou word as dit in n ligdugte houer is. Sit eers jou beskuit in plastieksakke en dan in die ligdugte houer-so sal dit langer vars bly.

Muesli-beskuit - gebruik ñ egg replacer en maak eie karringmelk (een Tbsp suurlemoen sap by ñ koppie soy/nut melk) - boom veganized!

The South African version of RUSKS, the hard, very dry biscuits good for dunking in cuppas. They originated with the Dutch who packed them when traveling long distances in South Africa's hot climate.

Dad's Everything Rusks    1box all bran.    2 c oats  2 c wh wht flour  4 TBLS bk pdr  1 lb butter  1 bx dark brown sugar  4 c assorted raw nuts  1 box raisins  1 c sunflower seeds  1/2 c flax seeds  1/2 c sesame seeds  1 c pumpkin seeds  1 qrt. butter milk  8 ex lg eggs    Mix dry ing  Melt butter mix with sugar  Beat eggs mix into buttermilk  Add dry ingr. To wet, add more buttermilk if needed  Make Slice marks 1"x2"   350 1-1 1/2 hrs  Dry in warm oven until dry.
