Southern Key baskets

Among the rarest forms of Southern Folk Art, the key basket appears to be unique to Virginia and North Carolina. They were traditionally presented, along with the important keys of the homestead, by the husband to his new bride upon their wedding.Few of these baskets have survived due to their being composed of leather and to the fact that they were no longer of any use by the late nineteenth century with the invention of door locks that required much smaller keys.
