Peter Magubane has been one of Nelson Mandela’s personal photographers for over forty years. He photographed the struggle against apartheid, as well as Mandela’s release and subsequent years as a statesman.

Magubane was there in 1976 when the Soweto riots began. He was taking pictures, running backward, he said, when a group of young men approached him demanding that he stop taking photos.
