WORLD ELEPHANT DAY. * 12 August *  More than 40 000 Elephants were killed last year in Africa alone. Increased demand for ivory, is causing a dramatic escalation in poaching and a fast decline in the Elephant population. Due to the human population explosion, Elephants are losing more of their natural habitat. For the Elephant population to increase, they need space, but they have nowhere to go.

As we celebrate World Elephant Day today, the of August the Elephant population is declining day by day, with more than 40 000 Elephants killed during the past year in Africa alone.

Sausage Tree / Worsboom / Kigelia africana / - Beautiful shady tree. Leaves are eaten by Elephant and Kudu. Flowers, especially the fallen flowers, are eaten by antelope like Nyala, Kudu, Impala and Duiker. Various parts of the tree are used for medicinal purposes. It is said that the fruits of the tree are not widely utilized by animals, except at times - Baboons and Bushpigs. Female: Cow - 550 to 700 kg  Gestation period: 11 months  Lifespan: Can live up to 20 years  Diet / Food and water: Buffaloes are primarily grazers (grass eaters), but will also browse on seed pods especially from acacia trees. They need water daily.

The increasing demand for ivory is causing a dramatic escalation in poaching. Other problems facing the world elephant population include habitat loss, human-elephant conflict and mistreatment in captivity. Do what you can to support the plight of these magnificent and intelligent mammals.
