Nelson Mandela through the years
Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid activist and leader of the African National Congress (ANC), served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. In 1962 he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. Mandela served 27 years in prison and was famously released in 1990. Mandela then led his party, the ANC, in negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy in South Africa in 1994.
