an orange and blue planet in the dark sky with clouds on it's surface
A thin crescent moon above Earth's horizon, which slopes gently from bottom left upwards to the right. Earth's atmosphere has a strip of orange transitioning to a wider band of light blue, with the black of space above. Mercury flyby in 3D
Explore part of Mercury’s surface in greater detail than ever thanks to this 3D reconstruction of the surface. The scene is based on an image captured by the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo spacecraft’s monitoring camera 3 (M-CAM 3) during its 19 June 2023 close flyby of the planet’s surface. Use red-green/blue glasses to best enjoy this anaglyph image. Image: ESA/BepiColombo/MTM, CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO; processing: K. Wohlfarth and M. Tenthoff (TU Dortmund)
Two partial solar eclipses
ESA’s Proba-2 captured two partial solar eclipses on 25 October 2022 while observers on Earth enjoyed one. For us on Earth, the Moon passes only once in front of the Sun during a solar eclipse. Since Proba-2 orbits the Earth in about 100 minutes, it was able to observe this eclipse twice. Additionally, the Moon was first observed while traversing the field of view in the upper right corner, but not blocking any solar light. Image: ESA/ROB
Mercury seen from afar, appears nestled between the spacecraft body and antenna. The planet's terminator runs top left to bottom right and large craters and surface features can be seen. It is slightly over exposed to the right. Eugene Atget, Mercury Surface, Apollo Missions, Rock Types, Dark Material
BepiColombo hugs Mercury
BepiColombo appears to ‘hug’ Mercury between its antenna and body in this image taken by the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission on 19 June 2023 as the spacecraft sped by for its third of three gravity assist manoeuvres at the planet. Numerous fascinating geological features are identified on the surface of Mercury that will be studied in more detail once in orbit. Image: ESA/BepiColombo/MTM, CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO
