Battle of Paadeberg, 18-27 February, 1900. The Boer army under Piet Cronjé was retreating from Magersfontein when they were caught by British cavalry near Paadeberg drift. The position was vulnerable to artillery, but Kitchner wasted lives on frontal assaults in what became known as "Bloody Sunday." Despite the British losses, Cronjé was forced to surrender, along with nearly 10% of the entire Boer army. The battle was the first major British victory, and a turning point in the war.

Hy gaan skool in Daljosafat, (twee ander bekende skrywers, Totius en D.F. Malherbe is in dié tyd ook saam met hom op skool). Hy is ook vriende met die digter Eugene Marais.

Hy was ‘n aggressiewe vreeslose vegter met ‘n hardkoppige onafhanklike wil. Hy word verkies tot veldkornet in 1857 en neem deel aan verskeie stamveldslae. Ontnugter deur ‘n hofbevel 1869, onttrek hy hom van die publieke lewe, maar keer terug toe die Britse anneksasie van Transvaal sy politieke entoesiasme aanwakker.
