If we have room for ornamentals in the back yard, the Chinese pistache is one of my top choices. It will tolerate our hot sun and occasional freezes (down to 10 degrees!). UofA says it is a perfect tree for our climate. Some people call it the Ugly Duckling Tree because it starts as a scraggly little thing and has only a moderate growth rate but eventually grows into a great beauty.

Chinese Pistache - Hardy to minus and super drought tolerant.
