When I received the submission Little Bee by British author Chris Cleave in 2007 and read the first lines—“Most days I wish I was a British pound coin instead of an African girl. Everyone would be pleased to see me coming.”—the world fell away.

Johnna, Joanna. Fiction. Book. The story of Dinah, a tragic character from the Bible whose great love, a prince, is killed by her brother, leaving her alone and pregnant. The novel traces her life from childhood to death, in the process examining sexual and religious practices of the day, and what it meant to be a woman.

I have finally read this book (recommended by everybody, it seems!) and it is one of those special books that stays with you long after you've finished it. Read it and spread the word!!! Set in England and the Channel Islands in 1946; just after WWII ended. The story is told through notes & letters between a writer in London & her friends, and between her and the inhabitants of Guernsey; an island occupied by the Nazis during the war.
