Somerset House - originally built by the Duke of Somerset in 1549 as an imposing residence, he was executed at Tower Hill & the house passed to the Crown. After a long decline it was rebuilt in 1775 as a civic building and parts of it have remained in government use since. The Courtauld Gallery is here, it's a popular and photogenic place to ice skate in winter, and during the summer it stages gigs, films & fountain fun in the courtyard. WC2, Temple Tube.
