In the Tang dynasty (618-907) daily utensils were usually made of stoneware and goods for burial were made of earthenware. This jar was probably a funerary piece, as lead-glazed vessels could poison the user. Small spots of green glaze was added to the surface of the jar and they had run down during firing, resulting in a pleasing irregular pattern.
