“Louis and Lola” were Michel and Edmond Navratil (age: four & two). They were known as the Titanic Orphans, the only children rescued without a parent or guardian. It turned out their father had kidnapped them and their mother was alive in France. Michel was the last male survivor of the Titanic, dying in 2001.

This was captured with a Planewave 17-inch scope in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California. The CCD camera used was an Apogee U16 with Astrodon filters. The exposure times were 1.5 hours each of red, green and blue, plus 8.3 hours of hydrogen alpha, making the total amount of exposure time for this image nearly 13 hours.

Deep shadows create dramatic contrasts between light and dark in this high-resolution close-up of the martian surface. Recorded on January 24 by the HiRISE camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the scene spans about 1.5 kilometers across a sand dune field in a southern highlands crater.
