School-based activities this week are helping to involve and inform the community of the risk they say Government-driven changes pose to education. Also on teachers minds is the collective bargaining which has pushed them back into paid union meetings. Mrs Stuart, who is also the principal of May Road School in Mt Roskill, says it is the Government that has stymied negotiations. The implementation of National Standards, Novopay and charter schools shows what low esteem the Government…

Teachers on the march

Abandoned classrooms and massive amounts of debt could be in store for South Auckland if charter schools are established here.

The flawed Novopay system has spawned a number of serious side-effects that have changed tax brackets, misdirected ACC levies and forced teachers to prove their identity, among others. The Ministry of Education has now apologised for the much-maligned system and the "frustration" and "anxiety" it has created. Working alongside schools, the Sunday Star-Times has investigated thousands of complaints regarding the $29 million system and has discovered a raft of alarming side-effects

Serious side-effects in 'Novopay nightmare'

The flawed Novopay system has spawned a number of serious side-effects that have changed tax brackets, misdirected ACC levies and forced teachers to prove their identity, among others.

I have some sympathy for their view in many respects, says the minister in charge of Novopay, Steven Joyce. Other days I have felt more positive about it, and some days I havent felt quite so positive about it. Mr Joyce, Mr Fix-It, is also the Governments chief strategy man, meaning he spends much of his time driven by public opinion. The poll of 1000 voters found 70 percent of National voters want Novopay gone. Mr Joyce will have really taken notice of that. Among Labour voters its 8

A 3 News/Reid Research poll shows 75 percent of voters want the Government to dump the pay system.

The Governments Mr Fix-It Steven Joyce faces a difficult choice when he determines the future of the Novopay school pay system some time in the next two weeks. He can opt to keep pouring money, time and effort into the current system operated by Australian payroll company Talent2 or he can choose to cut the Governments losses and ask New Zealand company Datacom to revive the system that Novopay was designed to replace.

Editorial: Let that be a lesson

When it comes to Novopay, the public have been let down - but hopefully the lessons learned will not be forgotten.

Perhaps Key has been emboldened in his defence of Parata by his party line that she is receiving no more stick than any National Party minister of education, whose terms in office are always made a misery by leftie teachers. But history does not support that and, in any case, its reiteration does not shield the Government from Parata-caused blows. The blows are telling, because education is of great importance to parents whatever their party preferences.

My life of leisure may lose its lustre as the months unfold

Embarrassingly the Ministry's document dump was also fumbled - in its haste it put redacted documents online but the redactions could be removed. Just two months after Novopay went live, the Ministry was already financially penalising Talent2 for failing to meet obligations. Steven Joyce says they're learning to work together - he's given them no choice.

The Ministry of Education has dumped a mass of documents which reveal there were problems with the payroll system Novopay from the start.

Churton Park School teacher Jolene Butson thought her Novopay nightmares were over after four months of being underpaid. But in the past week she has found her sick days havent been accounted for, and she has completely lost track of what she is owed. From November to the end of March this year, I got paid my base salary but none, or sometimes just some, of my management units for extra responsibilities, she said.

Teachers: We warned you on Novopay

Two senior Ministry of Education officials look like carrying the can for Novopay.

“When it comes to Maori education, this Government gets a big F for fail. And why on earth the Maori Party are prepared to back ACT leader John Banks’, who is currently facing criminal charges, attempt to privatise the education sector, is beyond me and most Maori who believe in Kura Kaupapa. They are placing a private model of Maori education, called Kura a Iwi, in direct competition with Kura Kaupapa.

The union's national executives met at the weekend and decided to take collective legal action on behalf of members. Because of the complexity of the case, the association was looking at a number of legal options, Roberts said. "It is an unusual situation in that traditionally any action would be taken against a school's board as the employer, but in this case the boards are just as frustrated with Novopay as their staff,'' Roberts said.
