The program is operated by the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Penn. and invites children in grades 1–8 to visit the shelter and read to cats waiting for adoption. It helps the kids practice reading and provides the cats with interaction with a new friend
‘I noticed that Taj had taken an interest in the girl and was heading towards her. I thought for certain that the little girl would need therapy after the encounter and fear cats for the rest of her life. I could not believe my eyes when Taj approached the girl, bowed his head and then placed his huge right paw exactly in front of where the little girl's left hand was. It was incredible to watch.
For blind and visually impaired children, animals can sometimes seem scary and strange. With my daughter we encouraged her to pet and become familiar with all animals from a young age. Little dogs, big dogs, cats, bullfrogs, chicks, slimy tree frogs, and any other animal we could get our hands on. Thanks to the interaction, our daughter now loves animals. We just bought her two ferrets and she is SUPER excited about having her own pets.
