By Ewen CallawayWhen the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans discovered the 4,000-year-old Palace of Minos on Crete in 1900, he saw the vestiges of a long-lost civilization whose artifacts set it apart from later Bronze-Age Greeks. Ancient DNA recovered from Cretan caves suggests that the Minoan civilization emerged from the early farmers who settled the islands thousands of years earlier

A 'littoral sinkhole' - a collapse into an undersea cave - in Santa Rosa California. Such features are created when the roof of a sea cave collapses due to erosion - but can become tourist attractions in their own right

Blowhole (geology) - Blowholes, north coast of Barbados - Blowholes have the capacity to change the topography near their locations. Blowholes can eventually erode the area surrounding the crevices to form larger sea caves. In some instances, the cave itself may collapse. This event may create shallow pools along the coast.

Pinnacles National Monument, CA - Bear Gulch Cave (downstream from the dam and reservoir) owes its origin to rapid flood events and debris flows which episodically carve the canyon. The cave consists of passages between large boulders of volcanic tuff. The great blocks and boulders of volcanic rock that cover the creek bed (creating the cave) may have collapsed from the slopes above during rockfalls and landslides, possibly associated with major earthquakes in the past (Rogers and others…
