The amazing Spider-man. Worldwide. Vol. 2 / Dan Slott, writer. I continue to be unimpressed with Spider-Man's new direction. Parker Industries' high-tech doings in Shanghai come under attack from Mister Negative, who has turned Cloak and Dagger to the bad side. There's also a final showdown with Scorpio and the Zodiac. The high points come from supporting characters Anna Maria Marconi and the copy of Dr. Octopus's consciousness dwelling inside the Living Brain robot.

The amazing Spider-man. Worldwide. Vol. 1. After the fun of the Superior Spider-Man storyline, this umpteenth reboot of the flagship series is a letdown. Peter Parker is busy running worldwide tech firm Parker Industries, protected by his "bodyguard" Spider-Man, with some sideline work for SHIELD. I want Spidey, not a weaker version of Tony Stark/Iron Man. That a bickering Zodiac minion has the best one-liner of the book--"Should've stayed in Hydra"--tells you something's gone awry.

Amazing fantastic incredible / Stan Lee. The Spider-Man creator fittingly presents his graphic-novel autobiography, with help from Peter David and art by Colleen Doran. Takes us from his early days working with Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in the 40s to Marvel's creative explosion in the 1960s, through to his contemporary forays into the film industry. The latter years come off as too self-aggrandizing, but the formative periods are illuminating. Excelsior!!

The unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Vol. 1, Squirrel power / Ryan North, writer ; Erica Henderson, artist. Doctor Doom, Deadpool, even Thanos: there's one hero who's beaten them all. Then, what can one girl and a squirrel do when a hungry Galactus heads toward Earth? Also features her 1st appearance by Steve…

Oh my goddess!. 48 / story and art by Kosuke Fujishima. America's longest-running manga series (21 years!) comes to a close in this final 48th volume. Having proved their love by winning every test and tribulation thrown at them, only one challenge now remains for Keiichi and the goddess Belldandy: to get back to Earth for their wedding. With the help of their friends and family, the happy ending should come as no surprise.

The 6 voyages of Lone Sloane / Philippe Druillet. Sloane, a solitary interstellar traveler imbued with mystical powers, wanders a Lovecraftian universe alive with star dragons, planet-sized machines, insane robots and godlike beings. Reproduction of the 1972 French graphic novel. The large-scale format is a fitting match for Druillet's stupendous cosmic art. Druillet would go on to launch Metal Hurlant with Moebius, but Lone Sloane remains his masterpiece.

Epic Big Nate / by Lincoln Peirce. Like many people, I first became aware of Big Nate through the illustrated chapter books. Although I've been jumping on the comic compilations as they've come out, I was still surprised to learn that this strip has actually been syndicated since 1991! Here's your chance to sample a selection from each of the last 25 years, in this colossal 470-page compendium of everyone's favorite eternal sixth-grader.
