Avengers : time runs out / writer: Jonathan Hickman. In this run-up to the Secret Wars, Earth enters its last days and the truth is out regarding the Incursion crisis destroying the Multiverse--a revelation that has torn the Avengers apart. Reed Richards and the Illuminati faction are on the run, but some of their number--including Iron Man and Doctor Strange--are nowhere to be found. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Avengers are in relentless pursuit, with Steve Rogers leading the charge.
Incognegro / written by Mat Johnson ; art by Warren Pleece. Johnson's setup, grounded in history, is a good one: Zane is a light-skinned African American reporter who covers the brutality of Southern lynchings while passing for white. But this promising story quickly becomes overburdened by: a Harlem friend posing as a British gentleman, a twin brother who needs rescuing, backwoods cultists, and a Klan that seems improbably well-organized. "Less is more" is a truism this noir needs to heed.
Hip hop family tree. Book 1, 1970s-1981 / Ed Piskor. An amazing comics history of the rise of hip hop, with a near-encyclopedic look at how all the major players (and plenty of minor ones) got their start. As an added bonus, the design has an old-school '70s comics feel to it. With a discography of essential tracks to listen to while you're reading it.
Unicorn on a roll : another Phoebe and her unicorn adventure / Dana Simpson. Phoebe's friendship with the gentle (if narcissistic) unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils continues in this second collection of the comic strip. A feminine counterpart to Calvin and Hobbes that should find universal appeal.
