The amazing Spider-man. Worldwide. Vol. 1. After the fun of the Superior Spider-Man storyline, this umpteenth reboot of the flagship series is a letdown. Peter Parker is busy running worldwide tech firm Parker Industries, protected by his "bodyguard" Spider-Man, with some sideline work for SHIELD. I want Spidey, not a weaker version of Tony Stark/Iron Man. That a bickering Zodiac minion has the best one-liner of the book--"Should've stayed in Hydra"--tells you something's gone awry.

The amazing Spider-man. Worldwide. Vol. 2 / Dan Slott, writer. I continue to be unimpressed with Spider-Man's new direction. Parker Industries' high-tech doings in Shanghai come under attack from Mister Negative, who has turned Cloak and Dagger to the bad side. There's also a final showdown with Scorpio and the Zodiac. The high points come from supporting characters Anna Maria Marconi and the copy of Dr. Octopus's consciousness dwelling inside the Living Brain robot.

The 6 voyages of Lone Sloane / Philippe Druillet. Sloane, a solitary interstellar traveler imbued with mystical powers, wanders a Lovecraftian universe alive with star dragons, planet-sized machines, insane robots and godlike beings. Reproduction of the 1972 French graphic novel. The large-scale format is a fitting match for Druillet's stupendous cosmic art. Druillet would go on to launch Metal Hurlant with Moebius, but Lone Sloane remains his masterpiece.

Patsy Walker, a.k.a. Hellcat! Vol. 1, Hooked on a feline. Growing up, I was always a fan of the more offbeat, B-team superheroes. One of my favorites was Patsy Walker, a.k.a. Hellcat, who had the unique distinction of crossing over from Marvel's romance comics line into its superhero titles as part of the Defenders. In this comedic reboot, Patsy struggles with finding a job as well as unwanted minor celebrity--a legacy of her mother writing about her in teen-romance tell-alls.

Trashed / by Derf Backderf. Loosely based on the author's own experiences as a garbage collector, this "ode to the crap job of all crap jobs" intersperses its trashy escapades with facts about waste management. The stories feel a little too dated and downbeat to mesh well with the docu aspects, but Derf's Don Martin-esque cartooning style is a great match for the text. A 2016 YALSA top 10 pick.

The world of Edena / written and illustrated by Jean "Moebius" Giraud. A sumptuous collection of French comics legend Moebius's Edena story. When interstellar mechanics Stel and Atan find themselves on the paradise planet Edena, their technology-driven lifestyle is slowly replaced by an almost forgotten, organic notion of humanity--including love. Moebius's foray into the "ligne claire" (clean line) style, matched with his phenomenal use of pastels, has never been shown to better effect.

The complete Peanuts : 1997 to 1998 / Charles M. Schulz. Fantagraphics' historic reprinting of the strip starts to wind down with this penultimate volume. The lines may be frailer, some of the strips seem jarringly topical, and there's too many of Snoopy's brothers in the mix, but there's still a lot to like here, especially the emergence of Rerun as a fully-fledged character.

Legends of the Tour / Jan Cleijne. The Dutch illustrator covers the highs and lows of the Tour de France's 100-year history in this chronological, if somewhat episodic graphic novel. From the agonizing harshness of its early years (Eugene Christophe welding his bike back together at the foot of the Pyrenees in 1913) to legendary champions like Merckx, Hinault, and Indurain, ending with the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong and the contemporary era.

Daredevil, back in black. Vol. 1, Chinatown. After wiping everyone's minds of the knowledge that Matt Murdock is Daredevil, DD is back in New York with a new black costume and Matt has a new job on the prosecution side. He's also picked up a sidekick of sorts with Blindspot. The Chinatown setting is interesting, but the tiresome conflict over his dual roles as lawyer and superhero ramps up again right from the get go. The more things change, the more they stay the same (and not in a good…
