As the Etruscan Underworld demons Vance and Charun stand by to conduct the spirits of the dead into Hades, Achilles cuts the throats of his 12 Trojan prisoners as a blood sacrifice to the spirit of his friend Patroclus, who was killed in battle by the Trojan prince Hector. The shadowy ghost of Patroclus looks on approvingly at far left.
