This photograph was taken in 1959, in Moscow, when the Soviet Union unofficially allowed designers to stage fashion shows and stopped persecuting people for wearing trendy clothes. Dior held a fashion show, which was shown to the Soviet elite and higher up members of the Communist party. However, to show the clothes to the people of Moscow, Dior took to the streets (which is how this picture came about).

Senior Sergeant Roza Shanina was a sniper in the WWII Soviet Army. She racked up at least 54 kills of German soldiers before her death from wounds at age 20. She served part of the time in an all-woman sniper unit. Before the war she worked as a kindergarten teacher.

The Red Army had over 2,000 woman snipers during WWII (The Great Patriotic War as they called it).

Nina Lobkovskaya killed 89 enemies making her first kill as a sniper in 1943.

Roza Georgiyevna Shanina was a Soviet sniper during World War II, credited with 54 confirmed kills, including 12 snipers during the Battle of Vilnius. Praised for her shooting accuracy, Shanina was capable of firing precise semi-automatic shots on moving enemy targets. She volunteered to serve as a marksman on the front line.

Simo Hayha, "The White Death" is considered to be the most effective sniper in Human History. He served in the Finnish Civil Guard during the Winter War with the Soviet Union in 1939-1940. Over the course of 100 days on the Kollaa Front, Hayha killed 705 Soviet Soldiers, including 542 with his bolt-action M28-30 Mosin Nagant carbine. He also refused to use a scope, making all of his kills with traditional iron sights.
