A MYSTERY MUSHROOM emerges from the author’s driveway as a button on a stem (left photo), which expands into the characteristic umbrella shape often associated with mushrooms (center). Fully expanding to nine inches, the underside cap has gills containing the mushroom’s reproductive spores (right). The ring under the cap is what was left when the cap expanded. These identification points indicate that the mushroom is likely an edible parasol mushroom.
