The humble church of Santa Prisca on the Aventine, the station for Tuesday of Holy Week, has a fascinating history. In 1933, it was discovered to have been built atop the ruins of an ancient Roman house, perhaps the home of Priscilla and Aquila, who were the first to welcome Saint Peter to Rome. If so, it is the first place where “two or three were gathered” in the name of Christ in Rome, and therefore its first church. The interior was frescoed by Domenico Passignani (1559–1638).
