Roberta Flack was on an airplane when she first heard the original version of "Killing Me Softly With His Song" on the in-flight music program. She played it repeatedly, writing down the musical notes on scrap paper. Soon after, she went into Bob Marley's Tuff Gong studios in Jamaica and rehearsed the song but did not record it. In 1972, while opening for Marvin Gaye, she did an impromptu performance of it and the crowd went wild. She recorded it immediately. It spent 5 weeks at #1 in 1973.
