J.D. Salinger met Oona O'Neil, the daughter of Eugene O'Neil, in NYC before the war. He was in love, wrote Oona many letters, they dated, and then he went to war and Oona went to Hollywood. She was a model, beautiful, met Charlie Chaplin, fell in love with him and married him. J.D. Salinger was always fascinated by young women in their late teens, before they gravitated into mature adulthood. He probably never forgave Oona, and harbored a dislike for Chaplin over the years.
