Jack #Vettriano grew up in the industrial seaside town of Methil, Fife. He left school at 16 and later became an apprentice mining engineer. Vettriano did not take up painting as a hobby until the 1970s, when a girlfriend bought him a set of watercolours for his 21st birthday. His earliest paintings, under his birth name "Jack Hoggan".

Anniversary Waltz (2011). Jack Vettriano. Vettriano’s work has been compared to painters Walter Sickert and Edward Hopper with a strong film noir influence – his work is reminiscent of movie stills, each canvas capturing an intimate, emotionally charged vignette. He was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of the documentary “Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter.”
