Aaliyah (1979 - 2001). She was so musically ahead of her time that artists are still trying to catch up (especially her last album). It's crazy how one artist can be so influential outside of their own genre. In addition to her shaping modern R&B, her music inspired artists like The xx, Maroon 5, Adele, The Weeknd and many more. I'll always appreciate her smooth and haunting vocals. Definitley one of my favorite voices.
Aaliyah who's singing and acting career was expanding dramatically died abruptly in a plane crash. She played in "Romeo Must Die" and was to apear in "The Matrix II" and "III" and "Queen of the Damned." Aaliyah was 22 years old when she died.
Aaliyah has been credited for helping redefine R and hip hop in the 1990s. She is listed by Billboard as the tenth most successful female R artist of the past 25 years, and 27th most successful R artist overall.
Aaliyah, 22 — Died Aug. 25, 2001: Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the R&B star known simply as Aaliyah, had filmed the video for her song "Rock the Boat" in the Bahamas and was flying back to Miami when the small plane she was flying in crashed shortly after takeoff, killing seven of eight people aboard. (The eighth person died from injuries soon after.)
