Very unusual early C20th blanket cloth from Mali. Cloths of this type were prestige items hung up for display at important events such as weddings rather than for everyday use. This example illustrates the early stages of the impact of a wider range of colours that would transform the appearance of Mailain blankets in the 1960s. Unusually complex weft faced Ewe cloth with numerous subtle patterning variations.

These blue and white blankets have been prized in Ghana for centuries and old examples are more often collected there than in Mali. Ewe cloth from Ghana - geometric but with a sort of random pattern. My eye is drawn to this and I look at it longer than a perfectly symmetrical design.
