The Naghsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan is one of the largest city squares in the world and an outstanding example of Iranian and Islamic architecture. It has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city also has a wide variety of historic monuments.
Founded c500 BC, Persopolis was the capital of the Achaemenian Empire. It was sacked by Alexander the Great in 330 BC, after which it declined and was abandoned. The ruined city survives on a vast platform with doorways, columns and flights of steps. Bas reliefs show trees and other plants but their location cannot be determined.
