17th Lancers field kit Zulu War 1879. The 17th Lancers were sent to South Africa after the disasterous first invasion, and participated in the Battle of Ulundi. When the Zulu army faltered against the withering fire from Chelmsford's square, the 17th were ordered to charge, causing the Zulus to route. Their uniform was distinct blue with white facings. The plastron on the front could be reversed to show white. The holster likely held a M1872 Mark III John Adams revolver.
