Beautiful id tag belonging to Charles W. Kopke of the 24th New York Volunteer Cavalry. Charles enlisted with Co. D in late December, 1863 when the regiment was organized at Auburn, New York. Kopke would serve along side two of his brothers who also served in the 24th. They would see fighting at the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomy Creek, Cold Harbor and Bethesda Church. A remarkable early pick up U.S. box plate with both box hooks broken. This was found in Reynold’s Woods.This was found in the area where the famous Iron Brigade fought on July 1st 1863. It has a remarkable chocolate brown patina. It was found by legendary battlefield author and relic collector Dean Thomas. It is documented in his notes and has “Reynolds Woods” typed on his tag. RARE EXCAVATED LINCOLN IDENTIFICATION TAG. This is a rare style, with Lincoln's Profile surrounded by "Abraham Lincoln  President U.S. / War of 1861" on one side.  And the other side is stamped the soldier's information: Nathaniel P. Dean / Co. K. / 15th VT. / Vols. / St. Johnsbury VT." It is just loaded with the original gold gilt.  Nathaniel Dean enlisted on August 8, 1862 and was mustered out on August 5th of 1863.  Interestingly, in Dean's pension file, there is a letter by Dr. Gates B…

Nice condition early letter pattern style large size "U.S." oval lead filled cartridge boxplate.  This plate was a turn of the century Battlefield pick-up at the Battle of Petersburg, VA. and has a beautiful old brown ink tag on the reverse.  The old brown ink tag alone is a treasure !!  This excellent artifact is out of the 1940 - 1990 collection of the late Mr. Herbert Harper, Sr. of Franklin, TN

This plate was a turn of the century Battlefield pick-up at the Battle of Petersburg, VA. and has a beautiful old brown ink tag on the reverse. The old brown ink tag alone is a treasure !! White Canvas Haversack with Ohio History. A classic illustration of what is sometimes called the "Ohio" style haversack, this example has a wonderful, old tag affixed to the front stating: "Haversack/used by/Samuel Hitt Austin/Company I/79th Regiment, O. V. I./ Civil War." Constructed completely of uncoated canvas, the piece was made without an interior bag. Like most specimens, the body measures about 12" wide x 12" deep and the flap closes by means of a simple loop and bone button. It was…
