Bloomers and Middy Blouses Unofficial Uniforms of Farmerettes of WW1 Women wearing bloomers 100 years after birth of Mrs. Bloomer. Mrs. Amelia Jenks Bloomer (1818-1894), caused a stir when she wrote an article for her feminist publication ‘The Lily’ promoting the idea of women abandoning their petticoats for a bi-furcated garment -- the bloomer. She suggested women would find trousers, like those worn by Turkish women, easier to wear than heavy skirts. Photographer Brown Bros. New York
