Musician with Tympanon (detail of a Roman mosaic) ~ Villa del Cicerone, Pompeii. In ancient Greece and Rome, the tympanum or tympanon was a type of frame drum or tambourine.  It was circular, shallow, and beaten with the palm of the hand or a stick.The instrument came to Rome from Greece and the Near East, probably in association with the cult of Cybele.

The Casa dei Cervi (House of the Deer or House of the Stags) is the grandest of the mansions so far excavated in Herculaneum. Its two storeys contain numerous frescoes and used to look out over the sea front.
