The Dogons are an ethnic group living in Western Africa. They are known for their wooden sculptures, religious traditions, and mask dances. This is where the group found shelter fleeing from the Arabs advancing from the north. They chose to build their houses on top of the escarpment for protection and have resided ever since.

More than 100,000 people have left Mali for shelter in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mauritania - adding to the problems faced there following poor rains, over-grazing, food price rises and insect infestation in countries which have barely recovered from food crises of previous years.

Gunmen have attacked a Radisson hotel in Mali’s capital, Bamako, and are holding 170 hostages, the hotel company has confirmed. “Very early in the morning there was gunfire. Apparently it’s an attempt to take hostages. The police are there and are sealing off the area,” a source said. Ten gunmen are involved, a security source told Reuters. The raid targeted the Radisson Blu hotel, located just west of the city centre in a neighbourhood that is home to government ministries and diplomats…
