Ukrainian women march in celebration of the formation of the Waffen-SS 14th Grenadier Division “1st Galician” Ukrainian foreign legion. Spring, 1943. Lviv, Eastern Galicia. Contrary to common belief, Adolf Hitler did not view all Slavs as universally inferior. Those hailing from the former Austro-Hungarian imperial territory of Galicia (now part of the Ukraine) particularly were highly regarded by Hitler, even allowing them their own legion within his prestigious SS.

A portrait of two conscripts of the Latvian Legion (Latvian: Latviešu leģions). The Latvian Legion was a formation of the Waffen-SS created in 1943. Most conscripts of the Latvian Legion did not adhere to or follow National Socialist ideology. They were intent on thwarting the annexation and occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union.

Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler observes field training during a visit to a forward formation. Himmler had prominent illusions about his capacity as senior combat leader and was constantly on field trips to "evaluate" Waffen SS training. When shortly before the end of the war he was given a high command post, he failed disastrously and was quick in trying to escape capture.

By 1943, when this photo was taken, most French anti-communist volunteers serving with the German army had been swept up by the Waffen-SS Franzosische SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Regiment. As members of the Charlemagne Division at the end of the war, these right-wing nationalists were to be among the most stubborn defenders of Berlin.
