Charted knitting -- it's what makes lace knitting so much fun! Here's an introductory tutorial. One hint they leave out: if you are a Sinister knitter (you move your stitches from the right needle to the left needle), you should read the chart left-to-right on the odd (usually patterned) rows and right-to-left on the even (usually either all purl or all knits, but occasionally also patterned) rows.
