In order for the South Atlantic Blockade Squadron to effectively patrol the Confederate coastline, a Union supply base was needed. On November 7, 1861, the Union Navy attacked Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island and Fort Beauregard on Phillips Island. This image shows the circular path that these vessels followed. Their steam power enabled them out stay out of range of the Confederate guns. The bombardment that followed was heard clearly in Savannah and Fort Jackson.
