James River, Virginia in 1864. It shows the Union ironclad ship, the Onondaga. A group of sailors are on their way out to board the ship. Looking at these old ironclads, and imagining them in the summer in the south, I would have to think that they were unbearably hot inside.

Onondaga Cave, Missouri. The Onondaga Cave State Park is located in Leasburg, Missouri. The park was established in 1982. The park offers many activities including cave tours, camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and swimming. (V)

U.S.S. Onondaga (1864).  The Onondaga was a two-turret monitor ironclad, among the third generation commissioned by the Union -- which went on to order the world's first three-turret monitor, the USS Roanoke, during the Civil War; the Roanoake, however, was a conversion of an existing wooden ship, while the Onondaga was new construction, all-iron, and a more satisfactory warship in every way. Onondaga was a large armored ship of the first class, packing 8" and 15" artillery.
