The Curtain Fig Tree (Ficus virens.) This unique strangler plant from Northern Australia is not a tree as such, but starts its development when a fig seed germinates near the top of an existing tree. This seed develops roots that travel down the existing tree until they reach the ground. The roots eventually strangle and kill the host tree, but themselves remain in a curtain or vine-like structure. The roots on this particular tree have travelled up to 15m (49ft) to reach the ground.
